Gold and jeweled Kris , IndonesianGold and jeweled Kris , Indonesian short sword with Damascus watered steel blade, jeweled handle mounts and top of scabbard, ruby and sapphire cabochons transparent to semi-opaque, some with chatoyance (shimmers like the eyes of a cat), top of figured wood scabbard ivory, gold on handle and scabbard test to be 18 kt., silver tests .900 or better, 19th century, 29-1/2 in. including scabbard. Lacking one ruby, one small faceted emerald possibly a replacement, chips and losses to wooden elements, some elements loose. Collection of Courtney Smith, Sr., Highland Springs, Virginia.

A striking personal ceremonial dagger known as a kris or keris comprised of a slightly curved iron blade, a bent, an abstract, avian-form handle, and wooden sheath adorned with elaborate brass repousse sheath jacket. A brass spacer embellished with applied foliate decoration sits between the blade and hilt, while the wooden handle bends at almost a right angle and narrows to a point resembling a bird's beak. Size with sheath: 19.8" L x 5.9" W (50.3 cm x 15 cm); without sheath: 16.1" L x 4" W (40.9 cm x 10.2 cm); blade: 12.6" L x 2.8" W (32 cm x 7.1 cm)

Condition:
Some losses to applied decoration on spacer, as well as chipping to blade edge and wood shoulder on sheath. A few stable surface fissures to hilt, but otherwise kris is intact and excellent with nice preservation of detail and light patina in areas.

EARLY 20TH C. INDONESIAN STEELEARLY 20TH C. INDONESIAN STEEL & WOOD KRISSoutheast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely personal dagger known as a kris (also keris) meant to be carried on special occasions. The spool-shaped wooden handle has thin twisted thread wrapped around the handle to provide for additional grip. The forged-steel blade features a gentle serpentine profile above a pointed tip and has a curled tendril opposite the narrow, protruding shoulder guard. The sheath has a bulbous guard protector mounted atop the narrow blade housing, and the obverse of the housing is decorated with a mottled brown and tan wood panel. Size (w/ sheath): 7.5" W x 26.875" H (19 cm x 68.3 cm); (blade): 19" L (48.3 cm)

Condition:
Repair to decorative wood panel on obverse of blade housing with light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and oxidation to blade, with nicks to sheath and handle. Nice patina to all components. Blade is still quite sharp.

Sumatra, Palembang area, Indonesia Kris (keris) Dagger Handle carved from hardwood, depicting a Fevered Sumatran seated in the classic position with the right arm placed behind the shoulder to hold the shawl intended to keep his body from becoming cold and feverish. This said, the large bird's head that appears to be difficult to hold up may belong to Vishnu's famous eagle Garuda, covered in intricately carved patterns, on a museum stand, 3 1/4" tall. Fine condition. A superb example!
